UCD-FitzCycles.ie – New Name for 2016 UCD Cycling Road Team

The UCD-FitzCycles.ie team will compete in Ireland’s Premier Road Events throughout 2016 including the ‘Kerry Group Rás Mumhan’ and ‘Gorey 3-Day’ this Easter weekend and the ‘An Post Rás’ in May.

The partnership between UCD Cycling and FitzCycles.ie is a fitting one as owner Paul Fitzsimons is a UCD graduate and former member of the UCD Cycling. “It seems like a distant memory since I was on the bike with UCD, but this is a big deal for me as I see it as the next chapter in my involvement with the team”, said former Team Captain Fitzsimons.

“FitzCycles.ie celebrated its fifth birthday last November and we always saw that the next step in our evolution was to get involved with Irish cycling scene; a partnership with UCD was obvious connection” added Fitzsimons.

Busy Weekend of Easter Racing

This Easter bank holiday weekend will be a busy one for the UCD-Fitzcycles.ie squad with teams competing in the ‘Kerry Group Rás Mumhan’ and the ‘Gorey 3-Day’.

The A1 Team of Eoin Morton (Captain), Ben Delaney, Paul O’Reilly, Joseph Breheny and newly promoted A1 rider Louis Carnec will tackle the challenging roads of Kerry from Friday 25th to Monday 28th March. The UCD men have enjoyed a run of good form recently. Eoin Morton, competing this weekend in the ‘World Cycling League’ Track Cycling event in Los Angeles, won the season opening Phoenix GP. Paul O’Reilly performed strongly in the winter cyclo-cross season, recording a number of wins and Joseph Breheny has recently returned from Australia where he qualified for the UCI amateur world championships – UCI Gran Fondo World Series – to be held in Perth next September.

“The team brings a lot of experience with it this year, with four of the five experienced stage race riders and familiar with Rás Mumhan” said team manager Noel McGlynn. “Unfortunately Ian Richardson won’t be with us as he will be riding with the Ireland Team. I’m delighted that Ian has the opportunity to represent his country and am looking forward to seeing how the newest member of UCD-Fitzcycles.ie, Louis Carnec gets on”, added McGlynn.

This is Carnec’s first year riding with UCD-FitzCycles.ie. The relative newcomer to cycling recorded a number of strong finishes in the opening races of the 2016 season earning promotion to the A1 ranks.

The A2 Team of Niall Dwyer (Captain), Jamie Noone, Terry O’Malley, Conor McKenna and Simon Jones bring a mix of experience and youthful potential to the roads of Wexford. Noone and O’Malley are no strangers to the Gorey 3-Day and with the guidance of seasoned campaigner Dwyer will be hoping to reap the rewards of a solid winters training.

“We will bring a good mix of experience and youth to the Gorey 3-Day” said team manager Brendan Kilbride. “There are a number of strong teams in the race this year, such as the NRPT (Nicolas Roche Performance Team) but I think the lads will make their presence felt”, added Kilbride.
