UCD Cycling continued their run of success with a number of podium positions at the Cycleways Cup in Navan. The A1 race was fought over three laps of the tough Navan course. The attacks came think and fast early in the race with the first break of the day within the first 20km of the 110km race. UCD Cyclings Ian Richardson was in this break with the big names of Irish cycling such as National Champion Damien Shaw and Sean McKenna and eight others that extended their lead to over one minute, a lead they maintained for the day. With 10km to go Richardson, McKenna and Shaw were the three strongest riders left of the road with a sixteen second lead over the chasing group. As the finish line approached Shaw and McKenna battled for the line with Richardson taking the third place on the podium for UCD Cycling.
In the A2 race Louis Carnec finished 6th securing valuable points and earning promotion to the A1 ranks.
Cian O’Reilly added to his Duabthlon Intervarsity success taking the honours in the A4 race. O’Reilly was anxious to make up for the disappointment of puncturing during previous day’s Dublin Wheelers GP, considering the good start he made winning the KOM prime.
After an relatively easy start leaving Navan O’Reilly tested the field on the first ascent of the circuits climb. On the second installment he made his move breaking free from the chasing group to maintain a solo lead for the remaining 25km of the A4 race. “I was looking forward to today’s race and the longer circuit that suits me”, said O’Reilly. “I’m delighted with the way the way things worked out today. I’m new to road racing so couldn’t ask for a better start to my first season”, added the happy UCD man.
Ad Astra Scholar Ciara Doogan finished on the podium of the Womens race.
